The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) is the leading professional body at technician level in the accountancy profession in the UK. There are 3 levels to complete in order to be eligible to apply for full membership, Foundation Certificate Level 2, Advanced Diploma Level 3 and Professional Diploma Level 4. To qualify, students must complete (or be exempt from) the level 2 Foundation certificate.

Am I ready?

You will need to have completed the Level 2 Certificate and be recommended by the tutor to progress to this level. Applicants with GCE A-Level passes in Accounting or in two other academic subjects may be eligible to commence studies at Level 3, a short computer test will determine your starting point. Mature applicants (over 21) who are capable in terms of accounting experience may be accepted directly onto this level following a short computer based test.

Financial Accounting – progresses from level 2 with more detailed knowledge of financial statements and adjustments to figures produced by the ledgers, focusing on sole traders and partnerships. Management Accounting – learn about management information and cost accounting, including direct and indirect costs, absorption and marginal costing, cost systems, cost book – keeping, short and long term decision making. Indirect Tax – VAT – the basics and how to make a quarterly return. Spreadsheets – use Excel and learn/expand your existing knowledge of this essential accounting tool. Ethics – how the profession is governed and your role within it. Synoptic Assessment: A synoptic assessment tests the knowledge you have gained throughout the level, covering multiple (but not all) topics.

Assessment is by a combination of on – line exams set by the AAT. These exams are sat at various times throughout the academic year
