Whether you’re studying Agriculture, Engineering, Farm Mechanisation or Gamekeeping, our 500-hectare farm estate will be your classroom.

You’ll have the opportunity to get involved in every aspect of farming and estate operation; whether it’s milking in the dairy unit, maintaining farm machinery or active participation in routine farm and gamekeeping duties.

Apprenticeships provide an ideal opportunity to ‘learn while you earn’.

Students attend college on a day-release basis, one day per week during term time, for tuition leading to either an Intermediate (Level 2 QCF L2 Diploma in Work Based Agriculture) or Advanced qualification (Level 3 QCF L2 Diploma in Work Based Agriculture).

The majority of the learning will be undertaken in the workplace – the exact nature of this will depend upon the type of farm at which the student is employed. Assessment will be undertaken both at College and in the workplace, where you will be visited periodically by one of our tutors.

Students at Hartpury can elect to follow pathways which include either of livestock, arable farming or mixed farming.

On this apprenticeship, you might learn skills like how to prepare and cultivate sites for planting crops; operate a tractor with attachments; harvest and store crops; and maintain equipment and machines. If your employer deals with livestock, you might learn how to look after large numbers of livestock, load and unload animals for transport, and maintain the health and welfare of animals.

An apprenticeship can be a valuable first step into a farming career. These apprenticeships will typically take around 18 months to complete.
