This 5-day Block Release course will enable you to study part-time over 3-weeks giving you flexibility to manage work with study. You’ll be given full support during self-study time between breaks in the course.

The Site Management Safety Training Scheme Training Course (SMSTS) is for those who are are considering, or already have, responsibilities for planning, organising, monitoring, controlling, and administering groups of staff e.g. contracts manager, project manager or site manager.


It covers all relevant legislation affecting safe working in the building, construction and civil engineering industries. It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture within the workforce.
This course is endorsed by Build UK as the standard training for all construction managers.

At the end of the course you will be able to:

• implement all health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation affecting your daily work
• implement new guidance and industry best practice
• state your duties and responsibilities with regards to health, safety, welfare and the environment

Certification for this course is valid for 5 years. To remain certified in this area you will need to take a refresher course before the expiry date on your certificate otherwise the full course will need to be retaken.

Course Dates (5 days over 3 weeks)

5th to 19th July / 2nd to 16th August / 6th to 20th September / 4th to 18th October / 1st to 15th November / 6th to 20th December


This course is delivered and assessed over video conferencing software using Zoom and Microsoft Forms or ClassMarker.

You will be given member access to course material and log in details to participate in the course presentation delivered by one of our tutors and provided with a link in order to complete the end of course exam.

You will need the following:

  • a laptop or personal computer
  • an internet connection via broadband wired or wireless connection (4G/3G/LTE)
  • a built-in or USB plug-in or wireless Bluetooth speaker and a microphone
  • a built-in or USB plug-in webcam or HD webcam or
  • an HD camera or HD camcorder

A tutor will be facilitating the event and will coach you through the process.

Once you have received your booking confirmation you will need to click ‘View online event’ to register your details to access the video conference. All other instructions will be provided by your tutor.
