Have no unspent convictions for criminal offences connected with the MOT testing scheme or the motor trade, or involving acts of violence or intimidation
Be ‘of good repute’
Become a nominated tester (NT) for class 3, 4, 5 or 7 vehicles
They must also have an ‘appropriate’ qualification.
Complete a VT8 (Demonstration Test) which will be observed by DVSA.
This can now be achieved at your Vehicle Testing Station or at a training provider centre.
Once you have achieved both the MOT Qualification and the VT8 (Demonstration Test), you will then be able to carry out MOTs at a Vehicle Testing Station. The content of the qualification includes:
Working safely within a vehicle test centre
Communicating with colleagues and customers
How to manage and maintain your CPD
Carrying out pre-test checks
Carrying out an MOT test. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has changed how MOT training is done. The 5-year MOT tester refresher course has been replaced by annual CPD training and an online assessment.
MOT testers must complete the MOT CPD training and pass an online assessment between 1 April and 31 March each year to keep their tester status.
• This must be at least 3 hours of training each year, and
16 hours in the rolling 5-year period
• You must keep a record of your training
• You must take your annual assessment
• You must record your assessment result
If you fail to take the annual assessment by 31 March
this could affect your testing status and you could face
disciplinary action.
