This qualification consists of seven units, four mandatory units and one specialist units and has the academic equivalence of 1.5 A-Levels. The course units for study are;

1) Functional Anatomy – Examined (M) 2) Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology – Externally Assessed Task (M) 3) Field- and Laboratory-based Fitness Testing (M) 4) Sports Injury and Assessment 5) Specialised Fitness Training 6) Sports Massage 7) Technology in Sport and Exercise

You will produce three assignments for each optional unit. Optional units are subject to change in order to meet changes in the workplace.

What previous qualifications or experience do I need?

You must achieve at least five GCSEs grade A*/9 – C/4 in four different subjects, including English Language, or an equivalent Level 2 vocational qualification.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment: You will be assessed on a continuous assessment basis with assignments at specific times throughout the year. Assessment methods include essay writing, presentations and practical observations or performance. External assessments include exams and seen case studies.

What qualification will I achieve?

Duration: 1 year Equivalent to 1.5 A-Levels (Foundation Diploma)

After year 2 of this qualification, learners will achieve an Extended Diploma (Equivalent to 3 A-Levels.

What can I do after completing this course?

Upon successful completion of year 1, students can progress in to the second year which is worth an additional 1.5 A-levels. After achieving the 3 A-level equivalent after two years, students will be able to progress on to University should they wish to pursue a career in Sports Science, or alternatively on to employment within sports coaching.

Are there any extra costs?

Cost of the course will be approximately £100 which covers: uniform/induction activities & a compulsory qualification in sports coaching.

Additional Info

The course will make up a full time programme with students studying approx. 18 hours each week. This will be timetabled over 4 or 5 days. The course is the equivalent to 1.5 A-levels in year 1 and can be studied alongside other qualifications such as the Community Sports Leaders Award and a Sports Academy. In year 2 you will have the option to study either Higher Sports Leaders Award or an equivalent. Students usually combine the course with the Community Sports Leader Award course in the first year to add to their Practical involvement and experience. All students will be required to participate in educational visits in the first year & second year.
